An older version of Yahoo Messenger was shut down in August 2016, while the version of Messenger which will shut down on the 17th July had been launched in December 2015.
Yahoo Messenger was first launched in 1998 under the name Yahoo Pager, it was then renamed Yahoo Messenger in 1999 and offered users a first real time communication platform. The new app allows users to create separate chat rooms for people, topics or private chats, as well as turn off notifications in chat rooms, among other features. Users who already have access to the Squirrel service can invite others, while others who wish to use the service can request an invitation. Users will henceforth be unable to access its services, including chats, instead they will be redirected to a new Squirrel service, which is also available for download on iOS and Android on the App Store and Play Store. The much-loved Yahoo Messenger chat service, from will shut down from July 17, 2018.
